| Known as the Spice Island, Grenada is well known for its production of various spices. It's the second largest producer of nutmeg (after Indonesia) and it also produces mace, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and cocoa. You can also find various fruits, ranging from ordinary (bananans) to unusual (breadfruit, papaia and mango, to name a few). |
| The most famous export for Grenada is nutmeg. The tree actually produces two spices - nutmeg and mace. Mace is the web-like part of the plant that grows on the outside of the hard shell that protects the nutmeg. |

Another common export is cocoa. Quite a bit of processing goes into making the final product. First, the seeds are collected from the pods shown. They are then fermented and then sun dried in large wooden trays. Workers turn the seeds with their feet to dry them evenly. Then the seeds are dried further in a large drum which amounts to almost roasting. The seeds are then separated by size and bagged for shipping. |
